Background :

Although CLTS has been introduced to most countries in the region, it was not formally introduced in Sudan until 2009, when Dr. Kamal Kar conducted the first hands-on CLTS training workshop in the town of Kosti in White Nile State.

Communities that practice Open Defecation (OD) place their overall health, and especially that of their children, at extreme and unnecessary risks. It presents a danger to the safety of the water and food supply, which often results in diarrhea and other water borne diseases. Children under 5 are particularly susceptible to diarrhea (from 3 to 17 cases per month based on Community Health Promoters (CHPs) records). This reality contributes directly to children malnutrition, simultaneously increases child mortality in poor communities, in where most families fail to cover the high cost of the treatment.

The lack of awareness among communities about the negative effects of OD and the easy solution lies at the root of the problem. On the other hand children, and adult as well, reported cases of stomach problems which appeared as a result of the polluted water

Currently government and other partners are working to enhance sanitation this creates demand for facilitators . The demand for facilitators far exceeds the supply of trainers who have what it takes. It needs a special style, interaction and behavior on the part of the facilitators and hence this course as designed by Dr. Kamal Kar, is hands-on and extremely practical.

Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) focuses on igniting a change in sanitation behaviour rather than constructing toilets. It does this through a process of social awakening that is stimulated by facilitators from within or outside the community .
